On March 29, 2022 Kholiqzoda Hokim Hikmatullo Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan held a working meeting with the delegation of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) led by Ms. Zsuzsanna Hargitai Managing Director for Central Asia, and was also attended by Ms. Rika Ishii EBRD Resident Representative in Tajikistan and EBRD Regional Director for Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan Ms. Ayten Rustamova.
During the meeting parties discussed the current global situation and its impact on the economy of the Republic of Tajikistan, as well as productive cooperation and ongoing support from the EBRD in socio-economic development of Tajikistan including banking system.
Hokim Kholiqzoda Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan thanked the EBRD delegation for the long-lasting fruitful cooperation and constant support in development of country's economy, in particular stressing the provision of financial and technical assistance to the banking system of Tajikistan in the framework of which the amount of more than 800 million euro was allocated to the economy of Tajikistan.
Hokim Kholiqzoda highly appreciated the EBRD's contribution to strengthening banking system of the country, including strengthening corporate governance, foreign exchange market and capital market development, improving monetary policy, and professional development of employees of the banking system. At the same time, taking advantage of this prestigious financial institution, Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan called on the EBRD Managing Director for Central Asia to assist in establishing correspondent relations between Tajik banks and European and Eastern banks.
In her turn, Ms. Zsuzsanna Hargitai, EBRD Managing Director for Central Asia, expressed satisfaction with existing productive cooperation between the parties and drew attention to the financial situation, including the banking system of Tajikistan during the crisis. She noted that based on the results of examination of the current situation in the region and taking into account the sanctions,the EBRD specialists will consider the possibility of cooperation in the field of establishing correspondent relations. “We will redouble our efforts in this direction and this matter will be considered at the head office” said Ms. Zsuzsanna Hargitai. At the same time, she named the formation of green economy, strengthening of corporate governance, insurance system development, and improvement of banking legislation as perspective and priority areas for cooperation.
At the end of the meeting, the parties expressed their interest in expanding bilateral cooperation.
