On April 2, 2024, Tolibzoda Firdavs, Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan, held a working meeting with the representatives of the Sustainable Banking and Financing Network (SBFN) and the International Financial Corporation (IFC) regarding the goals and expectations of the National Bank of Tajikistan’s membership in SBFN.
Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan Tolibzoda Firdavs mentioned that in modern world issues related to climate change, ensuring environmental safety, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing the "green" economy are becoming more important day by day and climate change can pose a serious threat to the economy and banks. In this regard, on December 15, 2015, the Republic of Tajikistan joined the Paris Agreement aimed at global response to climate threats and approved the "National Strategy for the Development of Green Economy in the Republic of Tajikistan for 2023-2037".
The National Bank of Tajikistan, on its part, as the regulator of the banking and insurance system, approved the Action Plan for the implementation of the measures of the Strategy for the Development of green economy in the Republic of Tajikistan. The purpose of the Strategy is to ensure economic development at the expense of rational use of natural resources, to increase the level and quality of population’s life, as well as to ensure environmental equality in the long term.
It is well known know that SBFN members are working to improve the environmental, social and corporate governance (ESG) of financial institutions. In this context, the National Bank of Tajikistan has taken into account the issues of introducing ESG principles and climate risk management in financial institutions and developing green financing market, - noted Tolibzoda F.
Mrs. Rong Zhang – SBFN Global Coordinator, in her turn, appreciated the National Bank of Tajikistan's membership in the Banking and Sustainable Finance Network as an important step to advance this direction, noting that this strategic partnership further strengthens the National Bank of Tajikistan's commitment to integrating environmental, social and governance issues into financial sector activities Tajikistan.
She stated that in order to improve environmental, social and corporate governance issues SBFN member countries, especially financial institutions, are to increase the flow of capital to activities that have a positive environmental and social impact.
IFC Country Officer in Tajikistan Mr. Farrukh Sultonov noted that joining the global platform provides many opportunities for regulators of the financial sector, especially the National Bank of Tajikistan, to introduce modern initiatives, including sustainable financing at the national, regional and global levels.
Taking an active part in the implementation of the Strategy for the development of green economy in the Republic of Tajikistan for 2023-2037, the National Bank of Tajikistan aligns its efforts with the goals of the Paris Agreement and contributes to the achievement of the country's decarbonization goals.
Also, during the working meeting participants were briefed by SBFN experts on the activity, structure, working groups of this Network and the opportunities offered to its members.
At the end of the meeting the parties expressed confidence that the membership of the BMT in SBFN can contribute to the development of sustainable financing of the banking system of the Republic of Tajikistan by studying good international practice and promoting common goals.
PS: Taking into account the interests of the National Bank of Tajikistan and the banking system, the National Bank of Tajikistan studied the process of membership in SBFN and the procedure for becoming a member, and based on the consent of the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan, applied to SBFN with a request, and on December 8, 2023 received a written confirmation of SBFN on accepting the membership of the National Bank Tajikistan in the Network.
