Discussion of the microloan guarantee program with the IFC

The Chairman of National Bank of Tajikistan Firdavs Tolibzoda held a meeting with the delegation of the International Finance Corporation on discussion of a new IFC project “Microloan Guarantee Program” on May 21, 2025 in the National Bank of Tajikistan. This program was developed to provide financial support to small and medium-sized enterprises and it is an important step towards eliminating the financing gap in this sector, promoting financial access in the country.

The Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan has noted that small and medium-sized enterprises form the backbone of the economy and make a significant contribution to the development of the country. However, given the high risks and the lack of appropriate guarantee mechanisms, access to financing for such enterprises remains limited. In this context, the proposal of the International Finance Corporation is considered as an innovative and practical solution. This situation creates opportunities for financial institutions to expand their target market and to test new credit products and services.

The IFC Chief Financial Officer Walid Ammar has noted during the meeting that the Microcredit Guarantee Program covers a wide range of small and medium enterprises, but places a special emphasis on expanding access to credit for those enterprises that are underserved by the financial system. Also, it covers women-owned small and medium enterprises, as well as enterprises in the early stages of development, and enterprises whose activities are related to agriculture, the environment and climate. This program not only minimizes risks for financial institutions, but also provides opportunities to support small and medium businesses, especially in rural areas and among vulnerable groups.

In conclusion, it was noted that the NBT considers this initiative timely and supports it jointly with commercial banks, microfinance institutions and other stakeholders.
