Visit of EBRD representatives

On September 25, 2023, Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan Kholiqzoda Hokim Hikmatullo met with representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) headed by Francis Malige, Executive Director of the Financial Institutions for the EBRD.

The meeting was also attended by First Deputy Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan Firdavs Tolibzoda, Director of the EBRD's Financial Institutions Department for Central Asia, Caucasus and Turkey Georgi Orlov, Head of the EBRD's Financial Institutions Department for Central Asia Jahongir Shamsiev, EBRD Director for Climate Strategy and Project Implementation Maya Hennerkes, EBRD Green Economy Finance Economist and EBRD expert Danin Cheung, EBRD Chief Risk Officer Lawrence Wilson, and leading banker of the EBRD department for work with financial institutions in Tajikistan Bakhodur Yusupov.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the current situation of the financial sector and banking system of the country and expansion of further mutually beneficial cooperation.

The Chairman of the National Bank of Tajikistan Hokim Kholiqzoda expressed gratitude to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for many years of fruitful cooperation, which reflects the growing opportunities to intensify the EBRD's work in the country.

He highly appreciated the EBRD's contribution to the recovery of the banking sector, including improving the level of corporate governance in the banking sector of the country, development of money and capital markets, improvement of monetary policy, as well as improving professional skills of banking personnel. It was noted that the EBRD actively cooperates with the banking sector of the country in the organization of training activities for participants of the financial market of Tajikistan, which is important in ensuring economic progress in the country.

At the meeting, the parties exchanged views on the launch of the second phase of green economy financing, climate change risks, support for sustainable development of the insurance market in the Republic of Tajikistan, investment of credit financial institutions, interest and readiness of the National Bank of Tajikistan to continue and expand cooperation with the EBRD.

Francis Malige, Executive Director of the EBRD's Financial Institutions Department, noted with satisfaction that the banking system of the Republic of Tajikistan has achieved impressive results. Recalling the long-standing mutually beneficial cooperation between the parties, Francis Malige emphasized that, using all opportunities, the EBRD will continue to provide technical assistance for the implementation of reforms aimed at the development of the insurance sector and the payment system, in particular cashless settlements and digital financial services, the relevance of which has increased even more with the signing of the decree of the President of the Republic of Tajikistan "On measures on expansion of cashless payments".
